Restoration of the A.P. Hill Monument
Designed by Richmond architect William Ludlow Sheppard, and
unveiled on May 30, 1892, the bronze statue of Confederate
Lt. General Ambrose Powell (A.P.) Hill stands at the intersection
of Hermitage road and Laburnum Avenue. The land for the
monument was donated by Maj. Lew Ginter and Hill's remains
are buried beneath the base of the monument.
The last comprehensive conservation treatment carried out on
the statue was done in 1982, and the statue is now in dire need
of restoration. The excessive green you see covering the bronze
figure is indicative of significant deterioration.
Mr. Andrew Baxter of Bronze et al who recently did restorative
work on the statue of Stonewall Jackson has assessed the damage
to the Hill statue and has agreed to do the work. We have begun
the arduous task of raising the estimated cost of nearly $10,000
and are asking for your generous support.
We hope that you will want to participate in saving this lovely work
of art. Your donation is tax-deductible as contributions are handled
by the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation, a 501(c) (3),
nonprofit, organization.
