A note about Yahoo Groups and Spam...
Before you join a group, please take a few minutes to set up a
‘disposable’ email address – that is, one you will only use for this
group.
Have it forward the email to your regular email address. You can use
Yahoo, Hotmail, etc. for the free ‘disposable’ account.
I’ll explain why –
Yahoo groups is a great service, and it’s free. (OK – there are ads, but I
ignore them - so can you). The downside is that spammers harvest email
addresses from Yahoo Groups to add to their list of targets.
OK – so you sign up with your disposable email and start getting messages
from the group. Then someone spams you. It’s not bad at first –
maybe one a day – but then it gets to be too much.
Simply create another disposable address, edit your Yahoo Groups profile
to use your new address, and then delete your original disposable address
(do this from the service you used to set it up – again, Yahoo, Hotmail,
etc). Or, point the old address to a bogus email address, like
dont@spam.us.
An option you may wish to set is how often you receive emails. The
options are individual emails, daily digest of messages, special notices
only,
or not at all. You can also choose between HTML and text formats.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask (email the
editor).
Remember, there are no dumb questions, only dumb answers!
You must include a short note
with your request stating the nearest
intersection to which you live so we
know it's not an automated
request from spammers! |
