Guidelines:

bullet

Questions need to be kept as brief as possible (1/2 page or less if possible).

My responses, while based on years of experience, aren’t necessarily the only way to do things nor the
only possible answer to a given problem. I will recommend particular processes based on my experience
and having done certain things a certain way. That is not to say that there might be a different way to
do something. I will give you at least one and most of the time, 2-3 answers to a specific problem,
allowing you to choose what you feel is best for your particular problem or issue.

bullet

Please don’t ask for specifics on an issue.

Remember, I haven’t seen your particular problem or issue, so I can only give an overall suggestion of
what to do or how to do it. Sending pictures pertaining to your question would help me be more accurate
in my response.

bullet

Please don’t ask for referrals (I am trying to be objective)
or for estimates on projects.

I can give rough ideas of what things might cost, but pricing is very subjective when it comes to
older home repairs. You never know what you might run into, so costs can vary substantially. Also,
the time necessary for an accurate estimate can be a long and sometimes laborious process,
depending on the problem.

My background consists of over 35 years in construction, including historic restoration
and older home renovation.

I came up through the ranks in construction, beginning as a carpenter's helper and progressing through
form carpenter, framing and finish carpenter and then foreman and finally superintendent. I have always
enjoyed working on older homes and renovation projects. A couple of my most recent projects have been
the renovations to the President's House at the college of William and Mary and the renovation to the
Henrico Theatre in Highland Springs. Both of these projects were over 1.5 million dollar projects.
I am currently a Superintendent for a commercial construction company.
