[Editors Note: This excellent advice comes from an email sent through a neighborhood email list]

Yes folks....
It’s time for the Gypsies who come off of I-95, see you out
working in the yard, walk into your unlocked house, steal as many small
objects <such as JEWELRY> that can fit into pockets, purses and whatever
else they carry, slip out unnoticed and, well, there you have it.

It was early/mid-April on a Friday afternoon that this happened to us while
we were doing yardwork with the house unlocked. THEN, the same time
the NEXT April, we noticed a woman walking through our yard as if she
had come from the back (there is no alley behind our house and no reason
for anyone to have been in the back of our house). We watched in shock
as she walked through the yard, into the street and west on Palmyra.
Of course we thought we’d been hit again, but the doors were locked.
This happened on a Friday afternoon/early evening NEARLY A YEAR TO
THE DAY AND TIME that we were robbed. I’m not kidding when I say,
CALL THE POLICE if you notice something like this. (Even the police tell
you that.)

Things to keep in mind...

1. DON’T WAIT and ask yourself “should I call the police?” By the time you do,
the suspect is out of the area and, yes, the police CAN stop a person that
you’ve described if they see them. (For all you know, the police may already
be looking for this person.)

2. NOTICE who’s in your yard or in your neighborhood. Be prepared to give
a description if asked. Write down the details if you have to. Notice cars
that keep driving around the block. Get the license number.

3. If you notice ANYTHING out of the ordinary, CALL THE POLICE.
If it doesn’t look right, walk right, act right, it probably ISN’T right.

4. DO NOT store your jewelry in a jewelry box on top of the dresser in
your bedroom. (Yes, it’s your right to store your things wherever you
want, but, unfortunately, those folks who steal for a living have taken
that right away.) Even a safe in the basement isn’t SAFE if it’s not bolted
to a stud in the wall or to the floor and is light enough to carry. And
believe me, if it can be carried, it will be.

5. DON’T THINK that your dresser drawers are better places to store
your jewelry. THEY’RE NOT. These people are professionals and THEY
WILL FIND IT
. And it won’t take them very long to find your precious
things either.

6. All thieves are NOT MEN. Be wary of unknown women who seem to
blend with you and your neighbors as if they’re ready to take a nice power
walk in your neighborhood on a pleasant April afternoon. They’ll take that
walk, walk into your house, take your things and walk out just as if they’re
shopping in a grocery store where they know what items are on which aisle.
Trust me.

7. REPORT ALL THEFT. Even if “that ‘ole ring wouldn’t mean anything to
anyone else”, think of the next person the thieves will hit. The next person
may be wiped out of a valuable collection and YOU may have been able to
help by making a simple phone call to the police.

8. LOCK YOUR DOORS. LOCK YOUR DOORS. LOCK YOUR DOORS. EVEN WHEN
YOU’RE AT HOME OR IN YOUR YARD. Read my lips, “if your doors are locked
the Gypsies will try the next house.” They move quickly and can’t/won’t futz
with your locks. (For the most part.) These are the times we live in. Gone are
the days when you raked your yard with the kitchen or basement door open.

Just as Easter comes this time every year, THE GYPSIES ARE COMING
so be prepared.

Stay alert!
