Richmond City Council blocks Laburnum roundaboutPosted: wnRenderDate('Tuesday, October 27, 2009 9:30 AM EST', '', true); Oct 27, 2009 9:30 AM EDTThe controversial roundabout at Hermitage and Laburnum avenues in Richmond's North Side will not become a reality. In a seven to two vote, Richmond city council approved an ordinance last night prohibiting the installation of a roundabout at that intersection. The idea was to reduce accidents at the intersection of Laburnum and Hermitage that includes a statue of Confederate General A.P. Hill in the center of the road. Despite opposition to the roundabout, about a half dozen people said they wanted it built in their community. "It's a big disappointment," said Nancy Reynolds. "It's a shame the neighborhood is losing what would have been a beautiful gateway to the city." "I'm disappointed in the vote. I wish the city would have gone ahead with this project," said Sam Ruggs. Those opposed to the project say traffic coming out of the roundabout would not be pedestrian friendly and that it would create a cut-through problem for nearby communities. A vote on four other proposed roundabouts, including one along Forest Hill Avenue, is expected at a later date. |

Sorry to see this fail. As I was driving home tonight through this intersection, I stopped for an late yellow light. I watched a car gingerly making its way around the monument making a left turn. The car stopped. Lucky for all of us that it did, as another driver decided to speed through the red light. Scary!
Speeding is impossible in a well designed round-about. The main complaint I read about round-abouts is that people are confused. My reaction to confusing driving situations is to slow down. Isn' that what we want?
