Meeting convened at Holton Elementary School

Guest Speakers Jennifer McClellan, substituting for Walter Stosch, updated us
on the General Assembly actions. She spoke of the mayor’s crime
initiative, which included stricter penalties and a better database
for sex offenders. No transportation laws were accomplished, the
minimum wage was not increased. She spoke also of addressing the
payday lenders with a bill to put them out of business, but it did not
pass. They were able to limit the number of loans per person. She
stated that the constitutional amendment to outlaw same-sex marriage
must not be passed. No opposing views presented. A resident expounded
upon the amendment, stating that it has far-reaching ramifications for
all that would be very detrimental. Mention made of Battery Park, and
the city’s responsibility for it.

Norma Murdoch-Kitt spoke of her 30 years of active civic leadership,
including 8 terms as the president of the Ginter Park Civic Assn. She
wants to be the School Board representative. She stated that the
talented people in our community are capable of making our schools
the best schools. Proponent of IB (International Baccalaureate) program.
At Thomas Jefferson we have the first one for the eleventh grade. 200
families applied for the 50 spots. She is also on the Tech Advisory Board.

Carol Wolf is the incumbent for the School Board. Carol Wolf spoke
of the many improvements that have been brought about during the
past four years she has been on the School Board. She stated that we
were meeting in the Holton library because they now had a good
principal, David Hudson, who encouraged community involvement, and
had lifted Holton and our community. Chandler is not accredited yet,
although it is beautiful inside. She brought to everyone’s attention that
Henderson Middle is where her children have gone, and that it has been
accredited for four years. When Carol came on board, she learned to her
shock that they were not submitting paperwork for the reimbursements
available from Medicare and Medicaid. Since she insisted that they begin
doing this, $7 million has been collected. She told of her personal
experience with Battery Park and the decision to keep Norell open
during the cleanup. She argued persuasively that it needed to be
closed. Her courage and persuasiveness have served the children of
the school district well.

Lt. Tim Morley spoke about the vital help provided by the citizens
in catching the burglar plaguing our neighborhood. He was also tied
in to Henrico cases. He reminded us that kids on the streets need to
be in school, and to report them at 646-ABCD. The number 646-4105
is the 4th precinct and can be used also for vacation surveillance.
Free clubs are available for car protection. He has yet to see a clubbed
car get stolen. Working on Chamberlayne hotels.

Chuck Epes spoke on the mini-arch to be built on the median of
Brook and Fauquier and Laburnum. Several permits need to be
secured for work to proceed, and they are being processed.
