General Meeting July 19, 2005
Pizza Social - Pizza and drinks served on the patio at Once Upon a Vine.
Call to Order-Meeting convened at 7:00 PM.
Business
First guest speaker was Valerie Harrison, with Even Start, a
federally
funded program designed to break the illiteracy cycle.
Parents are provided with GED prep assistance, and their children
aged 2 to 4 years old, are helped as well.In the annex at A V Norvell
School.
-Carol Wolf of the School Board spoke of the progress being
made in
our schools. When Carol began on the Board, there were only 10 accredited
schools. Now there are 39. She treated us to spirited readings of two poems.
-Barbara Taggart and Larry Jones also treated us to poetry readings.
-4025Yoga Grand Opening. Helen Campbell and Chris Egghart
introduced
themselves, stating that the studio is more than yoga. They are interested
in community wellness, and are offering lots of classes. They invite
us to participate, not just “support” them. All skill levels and all ages
will find something they will love.
-Chris Hilbert, our Councilman, spoke of the money Bellevue
was allotted
out of the discretionary funds: for restoration of the A. P. Hill statue,
for
markers for the Hermitage Road Historical Association, and for the Arch
restoration.
Mr. Hilbert is optimistic about the schools, citing their being fully funded
is evident at Holton, showing such good progress under the leadership
of Principal Hudson.
Police chief doing great job.
Sector that includes Chamberlayne is slated to be moved out of our
precinct in August. Chris is still stumping for more officers in the
neighborhood. He stated that they had approval/funding for 30 new officers.
Mr. Hilbert explained that the contract for TV coverage for City Council,
at a cost of $25,000 for broadcast on WCVE has ended.
Mayor is studying proposals for Shockhoe Bottom.
The Performing Arts Center has the deadline of 12/31/2006 to meet
the budget goals. The benefits will be for all, not just for the
Symphony, Opera, Ballet crowd. A much needed arts and education venue.
