General Meeting

Pizzas                             Pizzas and sodas for all! The candidates mingled
                                      with us informally.

Call to Order                    Meeting convened in the library of Holton Elementary
                                      School at 7:00 PM.
 

Business                           Political candidates running in the June election were
                                      present and each were given a few minutes to speak to the
                                      assembly. Melvin Law and Jennifer McClellan are
                                      running for the House. Michelle Welch and Mike Herring
                                      are running for Commonwealth’s Attorney.

                                      City Council
                                      Chris Hilbert, our Councilman from District 3, spoke
                                      on several topics. He stated he is excited about the changes
                                      occurring in the city. He spoke highly of the new police
                                      chief and the great job he is doing. Mr. Hilbert stated
                                      he has authored an initiative to increase the presence of
                                      city police patrol cars. Of the 64 patrol cars used
                                      by the City of Richmond, only 15 of those officers
                                      live in the city. Using housing incentives, Mr. Hilbert
                                      submits this initiative for inclusion in the city budget.
                                      With respect to the Crisis Pregnancy Center, Mr. Hilbert
                                      stated he stands with the (Bellevue) community.
                                      He announced plans for a “Good Neighbor Award”
                                      to be presented in memory and honor of Walt Smith,
                                      in early fall.
                                      A monthly District meeting is held the fourth Wednesday 
                                      of the month at the Police Academy at 7:00 PM.
                                      Discretionary funds are available for each district.
                                      The uses need to be approved by June 30, or
                                      the funds will go back into the General Fund.
                                      Question was raised about dredging the lakes at
                                      Bryan Park.
                                      The precincts of the city are being re-aligned and it
                                      is possible additional precincts will be added.
                                      Arch repair & A P Hill statue cleaning discussed.
                                      Trees badly needed on McArthur.

Shawn Smith and Jakob Helmboldt
                                      enlightened us with an explanation of
                                       the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Act passed
                                      by the General Assembly in 1988. The intent is
                                      to retain the indigenous and woody vegetation
                                      of rivers, creeks and streams.
                                      We in Bellevue are affected by Princeton Creek.
                                      Residents informed the Department that the creek
                                      was being re-aligned.
